First Tianmuhu Meijie Art Season’s Grand Opening Major Success

Following the soft opening in Shanghai, the grand opening of the first Tianmuhu Meijie Art Season was held in Changzhou Liyang on the 28th of July.  With the backdrop of the beautiful Meijie Hills, home to the exceedingly rare fireflies, the event combined stunning natural vistas, in-depth and illuminating discussions as well as exciting and unprecedented art premieres.

An Artistic Premiere giving the Public Rare Access

After the opening speeches and official inauguration by WhyWhyArt Director and European Arts and Science Association VP Art Season’s curator Zane Mellupe, as well as featuring a main opening speech by speech by Zhong Chunming, Chairman of Meijie Mountain Hot Spring Resort and Speech by Zhang Shun, Vice Mayor of Liyang the first Tianmuhu Meijie Art Seson “Fireflies in the Heart” with a contemporary art exhibition was officially opened.

It was curated by Zane Mellupe and brought together 20 international artists: Alan Flesher, Claudy Jongstra, Daniel Espen, Francisco Hauss, Irina Banari, Ke Yan科研, Li Xingzhe 李幸哲, Maria Das Dores, Marina Fedorova, Monika Lin  Niamh Cunningham, Panos Dimitropoulos, Paulina Surys, Petra Johnson, Roy Lamour, Susanne Junker, Xiaohui Wang王小慧, We Are collective,Yolanda vom Hagen and Zane Mellupe.

In the exhibition, these artists from different backgrounds bring together their unique perspective on nature from different angles through the mediums of photography, paintings, sculptures and mixed medium installations. 96 works will be shown during the exhibition and more than half of them are being made accessible to the public for the first time.

The exhibition “Fireflies in the Heart” focuses on the balance between nature and urbanity, the interaction between species and questioning the role of humanity in the world’s ecosystem. It shows that each of our species has a different lifespan and sense of time and that we are just one of many species on this planet. It therefore is our responsibility to protect nature not only for ourselves but also for generations to come.

An Exclusive Musical World Premiere

The opening further included a concert by pianist and composer Daniel Espen, introducing his latest piece “Fireflies in the Heart” composed especially for this occasion. It was inspired by the following poem by Du Mu.

-Autumn Evening-

(A candle flame flickers against a dull painted screen on a cool autumn night,

She holds a small silk fan to flap away dashing fireflies.

Above her hang celestial bodies as frigid as deep water,

She sat there watching Altair of Aquila and Vega of Lyra pining for each other in the sky.)

An Unforgettable Multimedia Performance

Olga Merekina, a kinesthetic artist who produces multi-media and site-specific works situated in natural and urban settings, premiered her special performance “Flitting into Eternity”. The performance explores the captivating transformation of unremarkable brown insects into mesmerizing illuminators, the fireflies, during twilight. The painting contemplates the significance of their ephemeral sparkling performances, which lead to successful mating and the continuation of their family history. However, the threat of light pollution caused by artificial illumination endangers their chances of procreation, raising concerns about the potential extinction of these enchanting creatures. That have found home in Meijie hills.

An Enthralling Cross-Cultural Dialogue

Alongside the “Fireflies in the Heart” concert by Daniel Espen and Olga Merekina’s dedicated premier of the performance “Flitting into Eternity”, the opening also featured a “Sino-Western Nature, Science and Art Exchange dialogue” focusing on the intersection between Arts and Sciences and the importance of stimulating creative global thinking in environmental protection. The forum speakers were ….. (TBC).

They discussed how reconnecting the humanities and sciences is crucial for their mutual advancement, as knowledge promotion enhances scientific research. Artistic research and creation, as a unique human activity, inspire and provoke questions about our shared world beyond the sensory realm. Both arts and sciences rely on visionary intuition and rational elaboration to influence the world. The forum further touched on how many scientists and artists are actively raising awareness of environmental sustainability, essential for maintaining ecological balance and supporting future generations. Another area of discussion included how creativity plays a vital role in environmental advocacy and in bridging the gap between East and West to share successful programs and practices.

After the day’s buzz, during the late evening Meijie hill fireflies communicated with the guests through their morse light code, the message translating into each of our hearts.

Art, it is free and originates from nature. We believe that nature and art nourish the human spirit and are important elements in our pursuit of a happy life. This art season will continue until mid-October. More artworks will be featured in the outdoor exhibition of the Meiji Art Festival, starting in early August. We sincerely look forward to your visit.
